The upcoming American Marvel superhero film, Morbius, is based on the character of the same name from Marvel Comics.
The movie is produced by Columbia Pictures, along with Marvel and will be distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. It is supposed to be the second movies involving Marvel characters from Sony – Venom (which was inspired by Spiderman) being the first. Daniel Espinosa directed Morbius. The writing teams for the film, Matt Sazma and Burk Sharpless, started working on the script in November 2017. Art Marcum and Matt Holloway joined in the following year in June. Morbius stars Jared Leto, who plays the lead, Michael Morbius. Other members of the cast are Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal and Tyrese Gibson.
So what’s this movie all about? A scientist, Micheal Morbius, suffers from a rare blood disease. When he tries to cure it, he becomes a vampire.
In May 2000, Artisan Entertainment announced a deal with Marvel for distribute several movies, which included Morbius, the Living Vampire. Initially, the character was supposed to appear in the 1998 movie, Blade, in a cameo. The character was cut from the film and didn’t appear in the 2002 Blade sequel either. So Sony came along in 2017 with plans to feature Venom in the Spiderman film. Leto was attached to the role from the conception. Production for the film was supposed to take place in Atlanta, Georgia, where Spiderman Homecoming and Venom were produced.
Sony held off, probably because they wanted to see how Venom was received by audiences. There was a lot of excitement at Sony to produce Morbius because, “it’s a story about a healer that becomes a killer. So how do you deal with that?” Excitement increased when Jared Leto brought the character to life with the same energy as he did in Suicide Squad with the Joker. Audiences embraced Venom, so Morbius was good to go.
The female lead, Martine Bancroft, is played by Adria Arjona. She’s best known for her role as Emily in HBO series True Detective.
Principal photography started in London in February 2019. The next month, filming started in Manchester’s Northern Quarter, which was supposed represent New York City. Filming was supposed to be around 3 months. Reshoots were done in Los Angeles, California in February 2020.
Morbius was supposed to be released July 2020, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film is schedule for United States release on March 19, 2021. It’s supposed to be a blockbuster hit.
